A day before the third anniversary of the January 6 attack, President Joe Biden issued a warning to voters against supporting Donald Trump in the upcoming election, portraying him as a serious threat to both the country and democracy. Biden emphasized his commitment to defending and preserving American democracy, characterizing Trump and his followers as dangerous outliers. He urged Democrats, independents, and "mainstream Republicans" who value US democracy to support him, declaring, "Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot."

Biden accused Trump of being fixated on the past and seeking "revenge and retribution" against political enemies, using language reminiscent of Nazi Germany. Criticizing Republicans for changing their stance on Trump, Biden highlighted that some GOP members initially condemned the January 6 uprising but have since shifted their position due to politics, fear, and money.

The speech took place on the eve of the third anniversary of the Capitol attack, where Trump supporters violently stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump responded in a speech in Iowa, describing Biden's record as a "streak of weakness, incompetence, corruption, and failure." The Trump campaign released an advertisement accusing Biden of being the "true destroyer of democracy," referencing an investigation into Trump's actions on January 6.
