On Tuesday , the music world mourned the passing of the revered maestro, Ustad Rashid Khan, who succumbed to prostate cancer at the age of 55 in a Kolkata hospital. The celebrated artist had been battling the illness and was in critical condition, relying on a ventilator and oxygen support. Despite the hospital's best efforts, Khan breathed his last at approximately 3:45 PM.

Expressing deep sorrow, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remarked that Khan's demise is a significant loss to the country and the music fraternity. The renowned musician's health had taken a severe hit after a cerebral attack last month, leading to his admission to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. Subsequently, he opted to continue his treatment exclusively in Kolkata. Despite an initial positive response, Khan's condition worsened, ultimately resulting in his untimely departure.

Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan, the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, received his initial musical training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Recognized for his talents at an early age, he made his debut concert at eleven and joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta at 14, following the path laid by his mentor Nissar Hussain Khan.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rashid Khan not only upheld the traditions of classical Hindustani music but also delved into experimental collaborations, blending genres and participating in jugalbandis with various musicians.
