China has officially announced sanctions against five U.S. arms manufacturers for their involvement in weapons sales to Taiwan, citing concerns about the impact on China's sovereignty and security interests. The companies targeted by the sanctions include BAE Systems Land and Armament, Alliant Techsystems Operation, AeroVironment, ViaSat, and Data Link Solutions.

In a statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry, the countermeasures outlined involve freezing the properties of these companies in China, both movable and immovable, and prohibiting any transactions or cooperation with them by organizations and individuals within China. The ministry explicitly stated that the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan were deemed to seriously harm China's sovereignty and security interests, justifying the sanctions.

This development comes ahead of Taiwan's upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13. China has asserted that these elections represent a choice between war and peace, claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and leaving the use of force as an option.

Tensions have escalated as the United States, obligated by law to provide Taiwan with means of defense, approved a $300 million arms package to enhance Taipei's joint battle command and control system. In response, China had previously declared its intention to take unspecified countermeasures against the involved companies.
