The Congress party has made its first move in the buildup to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by unveiling a list of 39 candidates. Among the prominent figures announced are Rahul Gandhi, who will be running from Wayanad, Bhupesh Baghel, the former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, who will contest from Rajnandgaon, and Shashi Tharoor, slated to contest from Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, DK Suresh and K Sudhakaran will vie for seats in Bangalore Rural and Kannur, respectively. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal is also on the list, standing for election from Alappuzha.

The composition of the candidate list reflects a concerted effort by the party leadership to ensure diversity. Of the 39 candidates, 15 hail from the general caste, while 24 represent SC/ST/minority communities. This balanced representation was a focal point during the first meeting of the Central Election Committee, chaired by President Mallikarjun Kharge. Notably, Rahul Gandhi participated in the meeting remotely via Zoom, underscoring the party's commitment to leveraging digital platforms for decision-making processes.

While Rahul Gandhi's candidacy from Wayanad has been confirmed, speculation remains regarding whether he will contest a second seat, potentially in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. However, no definitive decision has been reached on this matter, with further discussions slated for upcoming meetings.

The Congress party's election campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks, with Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra garnering attention as it progresses through Gujarat and towards Mumbai. The party has unveiled a series of promises, including commitments to legislate minimum support prices (MSP), conduct a caste census, and enhance social security measures for gig workers. Additionally, the party has articulated a vision for youth empowerment, emphasizing job security and relief from exam-related pressures.
