Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has officially severed ties with the Congress party, resigning not only from his political affiliation but also relinquishing his position as a member of the state's legislative assembly.

In his resignation letter addressed to the Congress state committee chief Nana Patole, Chavan succinctly stated, "I am resigning from the Congress party." Shortly after, he met with the state's legislative assembly speaker Rahul Narvekar to formalize his resignation as an MLA from the 85-Bhokar Assembly Constituency.

Speculation is rife that Chavan will be crossing over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) imminently, marking a significant political shift.

Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the Shiv Sena faction under Uddhav Thackeray, expressed incredulity at Chavan's departure from the Congress. He remarked on social media that such sudden moves by senior leaders raise questions about political loyalties and their implications for party symbols, citing previous instances involving other politicians.

Reacting to the news, Rohit Pawar, an MLA from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) under the Sharad Pawar faction, lamented the trend of senior leaders abandoning political ideologies to join hands with the BJP, emphasizing the importance of upholding ideological integrity amidst shifting political landscapes.

Chavan's political journey, marred by controversies such as his involvement in the Adarsh cooperative housing society scam, has seen him rise to the chief ministerial post in 2008 only to step down in 2010. Despite setbacks, he maintained a strong presence in Nanded, his hometown, representing it in the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019, until losing to the BJP in 2019. Throughout his tenure, he played key roles within the Congress party, serving as its state president in 2015.
