Retired firefighter Bob Beckwith, known for his poignant encounter with President George W. Bush amidst the wreckage of ground zero following the September 11 terrorist attacks, has passed away at the age of 91. Beckwith, who battled cancer in recent years, died on Sunday night while under hospice care, according to his wife Barbara Beckwith.
Wearing his old firefighter helmet from Ladder Company 164, Beckwith stood alongside President Bush during a speech delivered to exhausted responders just three days after the tragic events of 9/11. Despite being retired for seven years at the time of the attacks, Beckwith rushed to aid in the search-and-rescue efforts, emblematic of the bravery displayed by numerous first responders.
Barbara Beckwith described her husband as "just a regular guy" who happened to find himself in the right place at the right time, gaining widespread recognition for his moment with the president. The iconic image of Bush addressing the crowd through a bullhorn with his arm around Beckwith became symbolic of American resilience in the face of adversity.
Bush, who maintained contact with Beckwith's family over the years, expressed his condolences, praising Beckwith's courage and resilience. New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh acknowledged Beckwith's contribution, calling him one of the heroes of 9/11.
