The Indian government is taking bold steps to fortify its commitment to the widespread integration of green hydrogen within the country's transportation sector. Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), RK Singh, recently convened a meeting with representatives from the business sector to emphasize the urgency of intensifying research and development efforts. The focal point of this initiative is to seamlessly incorporate green hydrogen into the operations of heavy-duty trucks and buses.

Singh, in his capacity as the MNRE Minister, announced that additional funding would be allocated to the transportation sector under the Green Hydrogen Mission. This financial injection is intended to catalyze innovation and technological advancements, crucial for the successful implementation of green hydrogen solutions in the automotive landscape. He underscored the pivotal role that businesses would play in spearheading research into green hydrogen applications for various vehicle types, including automobiles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers.

The critical need for a national roadmap to steer the sector's transition towards green hydrogen was emphasized by Singh during the meeting. He articulated that without a comprehensive plan in place, achieving the ambitious goal of significantly reducing carbon emissions in the country would remain an elusive objective. The allocated funds, currently Rs 496 crore under the Green Hydrogen Mission, warrant strategic deployment through pilot projects to initiate and gauge the efficacy of green hydrogen in transportation.

Singh urged for a thorough comparative study, delving into the costs and various aspects of vehicles running on green hydrogen as opposed to electric vehicles. Such a study would serve as a foundation for informed decision-making, ensuring that the path chosen aligns with both environmental goals and economic viability.

The envisioned comprehensive roadmap aims to outline detailed plans for leveraging green hydrogen in long-distance transportation, emphasizing the development of necessary infrastructure and strategies for domestic production to curb costs. Singh emphasized the importance of basing decisions on accurate facts, ensuring that the utilization of green hydrogen is optimized to its full potential.

While the government is taking a proactive stance, private sector entities are also contributing to the green hydrogen narrative in India's transportation industry. Companies such as Indian Oil, Ashok Leyland, and Tata Motors are actively exploring and implementing green hydrogen applications. The focus on the environmental friendliness of green hydrogen cells adds a significant dimension to the initiative, addressing concerns related to the environmental impact of batteries in electric vehicles.

However, challenges persist, notably the technology's yet-to-be-fully-proven status and the existing cost barriers. Green hydrogen is currently priced at around 4-5 dollars per kg in India. Despite this, some companies have set ambitious targets, aiming to reduce costs to a more competitive one dollar per barrel.

The momentum behind India's push for green hydrogen adoption in the transportation industry signifies a pivotal and commendable step towards embracing sustainability and environmentally conscious practices. This endeavor necessitates collaborative efforts between the government, businesses, and research institutions to drive innovation, reduce costs, and successfully integrate green hydrogen into the fabric of India's transportation landscape.
