Jagat Prakash Nadda, the BJP's National President, has resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament representing Himachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha. His decision came after his uncontested election to the upper house from Gujarat during the recent Rajya Sabha polls, where he was among the 41 candidates securing seats without opposition. This move was seen as a strategic step ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The parliamentary bulletin of the Rajya Sabha confirmed Nadda's resignation, effective March 4, 2024, marking the end of his tenure along with 56 other members whose terms were to conclude in April.

Nadda's transition from representing Himachal Pradesh to Gujarat highlighted the BJP's strategic maneuvering, aiming for a more assured victory in Gujarat amid uncertain outcomes in Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh. Although the BJP held dominance in Gujarat, securing the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh posed challenges. Ultimately, the BJP secured victory through a dramatic lottery after six Congress MLAs cross-voted in its favor, leading to a tie.

During the electoral contest, Congress candidate Abhishek Singhvi and BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan each received 34 votes, breaking the deadlock with a draw-of-lots favoring Mahajan and securing the seat for the BJP. This unexpected turn prompted the Congress to initiate damage control measures to avert further political turmoil.

To ensure stability, senior Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar were dispatched as observers, recommending retaining Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu as the Chief Minister until the upcoming general elections to the Lower House.
