Microsoft is expanding access to its artificial intelligence tool, Copilot, with a new subscription model aimed at consumers and small businesses. Following the introduction of a free AI Copilot for Bing search last year, Microsoft now offers Copilot Pro at $20 per month for individuals. This subscription includes a text-drafting, number-crunching AI assistant integrated into popular Microsoft applications like Word and Excel. Subscribers also gain access to advanced tools and AI models such as GPT-4 Turbo.

The company is eliminating the previous 300-person minimum requirement for the enterprise version, making security controls and Microsoft Teams upgrades from the $30 per-month per-user Copilot available to smaller businesses. Microsoft anticipates widespread adoption, with Corporate Vice President Jared Spataro stating that virtually all business customers are expected to sign up for Copilot.

In a competitive landscape with Google, Microsoft aims to dominate the market for AI productivity and cloud software. Copilot Pro faces competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus, a $20-per-month subscription introduced a year ago. However, Microsoft emphasizes Copilot Pro's distinction by integrating it into daily-use applications, providing a seamless experience for users. This move reflects Microsoft's strategy to extend AI capabilities beyond large enterprises and cater to a broader consumer and small business audience.
