Pope Francis Briefly Hospitalized After Weekly Audience In Rome

Pope Francis, who has been grappling with flu symptoms, underwent a brief hospitalization in central Rome following his weekly papal audience on Wednesday. The 86-year-old pontiff, appearing fatigued, arrived at the Gemelli Hospital on Tiber Island in a modest white Fiat 500, and later departed in the same vehicle under escort after a short stay. The Vatican refrained from immediate comment on the matter.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis was wheeled into the audience hall at the Vatican, a departure from his usual practice of walking the short distance to his seat. This change was attributed to his recent struggle with mild flu symptoms, which had also led to the cancellation of appointments on Saturday and Monday. Despite his ailment, he maintained his customary Sunday blessing overlooking St. Peter's Square.

During Ash Wednesday services last week, Pope Francis experienced frequent coughing fits and chose not to partake in the customary procession, indicating his physical discomfort. This occurrence echoed a similar incident in 2020 when he fell ill amid the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitating the cancellation of official engagements and the Vatican's annual spiritual retreat.

Given his medical history, including the removal of part of one lung due to a respiratory infection in his youth and a recent surgery to address intestinal inflammation, Pope Francis has been reliant on a wheelchair and cane due to knee ailments since last year.

Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis utilized his brief remarks at the conclusion of Wednesday's audience to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ratification of the Anti-Personnel Mines Convention. He expressed solidarity with the numerous victims of these devices, underscoring the harrowing realities of war. Additionally, he appealed for peace in regions such as the Middle East and Ukraine, while offering prayers for those affected by recent attacks in Burkina Faso and Haiti.

Following the audience, Pope Francis dedicated approximately an hour to personally greeting attendees from his wheelchair, engaging in conversations, bestowing blessings upon infants, and exchanging tokens of goodwill. His interaction with the faithful exemplified his commitment to outreach despite physical limitations.
