Sumit Nagal achieved a remarkable victory at the Australian Open 2024, defeating Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 in the first round of men's singles. This win marked Nagal's return to the Grand Slam's second round after a three-year hiatus. Nagal's last attempt at Melbourne Park in 2021 ended with a straight-sets loss to Ricardas Berankis.

In this thrilling encounter, Nagal showcased his prowess by dominating Bublik, ranked 27th globally, while Nagal holds the 137th position. Nagal secured a break early in the first set, maintained momentum in the second, and took control with an early break in the third set. Despite Bublik's resilient efforts, Nagal clinched the victory in a tie-breaker, securing three match points.

Notably, Nagal's triumph holds historical significance, as he became the first Indian player since Ramesh Krishnan in 1989 to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam men's singles event. The 26-year-old had previously achieved a second-round entry at the 2020 US Open.
